What is a Kitchen Witch aka Cottage Witch?
It is a witch whose magickal works are usually centered around the home, the kitchen or both. They find honor in everyday chores.
Where it started: I looked around the internet and a few sites claiming that it either began in Norway or Germany. One site said that consensus points to it stemming from older European customs.
Poppet: This is a doll that can be either bought or be home made. It is said that it gives good luck to a person and dispel bad energies/keep away bad spirits.
Some poppets will have messages hung around its neck.
Example:"The Legendary Secret of Goof-Proof Cooking: The Famous Kitchen Witch
For centuries, Norwegians have hung this good witch in their kitchen. They believe she has the power to keep roasts from burning, pots from boiling over, and sauces from spilling."
Goddesses: Usually a kitchen witch chooses one goddess that appeals to them the most or has already worked with them before. This doesn't mean you have to exclusively work with just one. There are Goddesses for different seasons (times of the year teehee) or the food/chore involved.
Here are two Goddess that names have popped up frequently on my search for information...I believe one site said they are considered counterparts-
Goddesses Associated with Hearth and Home
Hestia (Greek)
Vesta (Roman)
Tools-
* Altar- in their kitchen to honor the deities and goddesses of the hearth and home and family.
* Broom- this is not an ordinary cleaning broom, but one specially set aside for cleaning out psychic clutter, clearing the space of unwanted energy
*Kettle- very important tool for brewing concoctions, teas and potions.
*Knife- is set aside for the witchcraft. This is known as an Athame (ah-tha-me). Used for carving symbols into crafts as well as cutting fresh herbs.
*A Mortar and Pestle- for crushing herbs and spices
*Plants-wide variety of fresh or dried herbs
*Wooden Spoon-Used as wand in preparing dishes
Some kitchen witches won't use modern day electronics but it is up to what you want to use in your kitchen craft.
If anyone has more to add feel free too! I also found something called the Kitchen Witches Creed but it doesn't say who the author is... if anyone is interested I can post it.
